August 2022 Dividends

Greetings everyone, welcome to my August 2022 passive income update.

Another quiet month investing wise, outside of purchasing shares with funds received from dividends, I only managed to add 2 shares of Google and 5 shares of Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF.  The purchase of $SCHD will add around $14.08 USD inside my RRSP annually.  I spent a good portion of August away from home, mostly down visiting my parents, helping them with yard work and any other odd jobs that needed attention.  I also managed to sneak a day trip in to the States, hadn't been able to do that for a couple years.  Besides missing my local crossing time on the way back and extending the trip by 2.5 hours through a 24 hour port, crossing the border was painless!  I didn't totally disconnect from the markets, but definitely wasn't as active as I am when I'm home.

Early on in August, Canadian Natural Resources ($CNQ) announced that they would be paying out a $1.50 special dividend paid out at month's end.  I received two special dividends this month, with Tourmaline also issuing a special dividend, the fourth since November of last year.  It has also been announced that they will pay out one more this year and four more in 2023, amounts yet to be determined.

As a result of the special dividend announcement, I decided to exit my position in Enerplus, realizing a 154.7% gain, and bought 250 shares of $CNQ in my TFSA, this purchase will add $546 annually in regular dividend income.

I received dividends from 11 different companies across my investing accounts.  Let's take a look at the results:

TFSA

  • Pembina Pipeline Corp.            $52.71 (3 drips) Utilized leftover funds to maximize reinvestment.
  • CNRL                                        $375.00 (5 drips) Special Dividend
  • Tourmaline Oil Corp.                $740.00 (13 drips) Special Dividend and leftover funds
TFSA Total - $1167.71 (21 drips)

RRSP
  • Whitecap Resources Inc                $39.05 (4 drips)
  • SmartCentres REIT                       $37.93 (2 drips) Leftover funds used for 1 share
  • TransAlta Renewables Inc.            $25.14 (2 drips) Leftover funds used for 1 share
  • Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.  $198.00 (2 drips) Special Dividend
  • Power Corp of Canada                  $56.43 (3 drips) Leftover funds used for 2 shares
  • Royal Bank of Canada                   $177.92 (1 drip)
  • Abbvie Inc.                                    $141.00 USD (2 drips) Leftover funds used for 1 share
  • Starbucks Corp                              $2.45 USD
RRSP Total - $677.92 (16 drips)

RESP
  • Dream Industrial REIT                   $14.75 (1 drip)
RESP Total - $14.75 (1 drip)

Grand Total - $1860.38, this represents a 581.2% increase for the month of August compared to 2021.  The special dividends from CNRL and Tourmaline really helped boost my income this month!  From a quarterly perspective, I was able to realize a 69.5% increase in income from May to August.  This amount received meant that for every hour of the month, I was collecting $2.50 per hour!  I realize that the special dividends exaggerate these numbers, and will end at some point, but as long as I keep reinvesting those dividends, the long term dividend income will still be there to collect, hopefully for many years to come.

Through August, I have collected $7638.52 in dividend income.  This already represents a 51.8% increase over all of 2021!  It has now been 5 full years since I started recording my dividend income, happy to have come so far from the $12.57 I collected in August of 2018!

School started back for my boys today, I guess that means summer is pretty well wrapped up!  I hope everyone was able to take time to enjoy it!  Thank you for taking the time to review my results.  Till next time.

This blog is a method of recording my personal investment journey and should not be taken as advice.  As always, perform your own due diligence.
